Lose your illusions

I’m not really sure what to say about McCain’s speech … his job was to sound like really just a decent guy and gosh he loves his country, to convince us that he’s really not a douchebag like all those other Republicans … and I suppose, superficially, in the during, he almost pulled it off.
But after about a half second of consideration — well John, we just got through a week of hearing your buddies tell us all the same old lies, with all the same old venom, and the same old hostility towards anyone or any idea that might challenge us to be a better country.
So what “change is coming” exactly? Do you mean to tell us that if only we elect you, you and your party will suddenly drop all the evil and stupid things you support? Seems unlikely. How are you going to change your party, let alone the country, if you couldn’t even change your convention?
My favorite was the bit about how he would reach out to Democrats and Independents, Yes, but, what about Independent Democrats other than Lieberman?
So at then end of they day, yeah you’ve probably had a reasonably successful convention, brought the polls closer together, and shored up your support among traditionalists. But will the gimmicks of the week sustain you through nine weeks outside the spotlight of a convention? I doubt it.
Because actions do speak louder than a “cloud of rhetoric”.
Random side note: I thought it was funny the pains they went to in Cindy’s video to describe her family’s business as “distributing fine products” without ever actually using the word “alcohol”. Wouldn’t want to admit that they’re basically sanctioned drug dealers, would we?
Oh, and I also wanted to mention, in the future y’all might want to think about making sure the headliner is done by 11 Eastern. John Stewart trumps John McCain.
